Multifocal Soft Contacts
Multifocal Contact lenses are another non-surgical, non-invasive myopia control method to help correct your vision and slow the progression of myopia (nearsightedness). It is safe, effective, and convenient for most children.
How do Multifocal Soft Contacts work?
Worn on a daily basis, these lenses provide several areas of focus for the incoming light. The center part of the lens works to enhance nearsightedness for a clear distance view, while the outer ring gives the lens the ability to magnify peripheral light rays to focus on the retina. In some animal studies focusing this peripheral light on the retina has been shown to slow growth thereby slowing the progression. While regular contact lenses can correct most patients’ vision to 20/20; Multifocal lenses, according to Dr. David A. Berntsen of the University of Houston can also slow the progression of myopia by up to 43% over a three-year period.
Are Multifocal Lenses a Good Fit for My Child?
Children that are a little older (6+) might be a good fit for Multifocal lenses. They will need to be taught how to care for the lenses and put them in and remove them from their eyes. Younger children might have an issue with these lenses but many children take these tasks very easily. If your child has an issue wearing daily lenses you might consider Ortho-K.
