Limiting screen time
Eye strain is one of the many consequences of Myopia and straining your eyes can increase the rate of nearsightedness progression. During the Covid-19 pandemic, numerous children vastly increased their screentime during virtual school. From using computers for schoolwork to TV and video games, it has been studied that nearsightedness increased for many children.
By ensuring that children take routine breaks from activities that strain their eyes such as screen time, you can help ease the issues caused by Myopia. This is a natural way to help treat nearsightedness.
What does this mean?
Limiting screen time does not necessarily mean that you have to cut all screen time out. It simply means that by giving your eyes a “rest” from the constant viewing of electronic screens you are able to relax the eye muscles and reduce the amount of time that you are viewing these objects at a close distance.
One way to help your child’s eyes when using screens is for them to do so while being outside. Simply having natural light in their peripheral vision helps the eye register that there are more objects in front of it to see and while they may not be viewing those peripheral objects directly, the eye registers the fact that they are there.
